About Word Scramble

Anagram solving is a surprisingly well-studied cognitive task, and the thing that makes it hard is not vocabulary โ€” it is that your brain keeps re-reading the letters in the order they are printed. The scramble creates a false grouping, and getting past it is most of the work.

That is why the two techniques that help most are physical rather than clever: reorder the letters yourself, and say them aloud. Both break the visual chunking that the printed arrangement imposes. Experienced solvers also attack common affixes first, because English word shapes are far less random than the letters suggest.

The clock here rewards momentum rather than perfection. A correct answer buys three seconds and a skip costs five, so the optimal play is to move fast and abandon anything that does not come within a few seconds โ€” a run of six easy words is worth more than one hard one.

Every answer is a common noun with its category shown, so nothing hinges on obscure vocabulary.

Tips for a higher score

  • Look for common endings first โ€” ING, ER, ED and LE are usually sitting right there in the letters.
  • Use the category. A six-letter animal and a six-letter job pull your mind in completely different directions.
  • Say the letters out loud in a different order. Anagram solving is largely about breaking the visual grouping the scramble gives you.
  • Find a likely two-letter start (ST, PL, TR, CH) and build forward from it.
  • If a word will not come, skip early. Five seconds is cheaper than thirty seconds of staring.

Frequently asked questions

Does the clock ever stop?

No. Correct answers add three seconds and skips subtract five, but it runs continuously otherwise.

Are the words always the same length?

No, they range from five to seven letters. Longer words are worth the same but take longer to see.

What is a good score?

Ten in ninety seconds is solid. Fifteen or more means you are chunking the letters rather than reading them.
