Words per minute is a standard with a specific definition: one word is five characters, including the space. That convention exists so that typing a short word and a long word count proportionally, and it is why WPM figures from different tests are broadly comparable.

The average adult types somewhere around forty words a minute. Sixty is comfortably above average, eighty is fast, and a hundred or more usually means touch typing on a keyboard the person knows well. Accuracy matters at least as much: ninety-five percent accuracy at sixty words a minute is a better result than ninety percent at seventy, because in real writing every error costs a correction.

The word list here is drawn from the most common words in English, which is deliberate — a test full of unusual vocabulary measures reading rather than typing. Words are shuffled fresh each round, so you cannot memorise the sequence.
