About 2048
2048 was written in a weekend and swallowed the internet for a month. The board is only four cells across, and the whole game is one decision repeated: which direction costs me the least structure right now.
What makes it stick is that the game never actually punishes you immediately. A sloppy move looks fine โ the tiles slide, a number appears, nothing burns down. The bill arrives eight moves later when your 512 is stranded in the middle of the board with nothing to merge into. Learning 2048 is mostly learning to feel that debt while you are taking it on.
The version here uses the original rules: a 4 by 4 grid, a ninety percent chance of spawning a 2, and a score that increases by the value of every tile you create. Reaching the 2048 tile is the classic goal, but the board keeps going afterwards if you want to chase 4096.
Controls work with the keyboard on desktop and with swipes on touch screens, and the layout scales down to narrow phone screens without cutting off the grid.
Tips for a higher score
- Pick one corner and never let your biggest tile leave it. Most players choose bottom-left.
- Only ever use three of the four directions. The fourth is what breaks your corner.
- Keep your bottom row sorted in descending order โ it turns into a merge chain you can trigger at will.
- If you must break the pattern, take the move that leaves the largest tile adjacent to its twin.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest tile possible in 2048?
On a 4 by 4 board the theoretical maximum is 131072, but it requires a nearly perfect game. Most strong players top out somewhere between 4096 and 16384.
Is 2048 a game of luck?
Spawn positions are random, but the outcome is dominated by strategy. Keeping one corner locked will roughly double the score of a player moving in all four directions.
Can I undo a move?
No โ this build follows the original rules, where every move is final. That is a large part of why the game is tense.
