About Hangman
Hangman is a Victorian parlour game that survived into the classroom and then onto every platform that can draw a line. The rules have never needed changing because the game is really a lesson in information theory: each guess should be chosen to eliminate as many possibilities as possible, not because you have a feeling about it.
That makes letter frequency the whole opening. E is by far the most common letter in English, followed by T, A, O, I and N, and a player who simply works down that order will beat one who guesses at random almost every time. The interesting part comes later, once the pattern is partly filled and frequency stops being the best guide.
Every word here is a common noun with its category shown as a hint, which cuts down the guesswork without giving the answer away. There are no obscure words, no proper nouns you would need to have heard of, and nothing that hinges on a spelling nobody agrees on.
Your score is the streak โ how many words you have solved in a row without a loss. It banks as soon as you win a round, so a good run is saved even if you wander off mid-streak.
Tips for a higher score
- Open with E, then A, R, I, O and T. Those six letters cover a large share of English text.
- Guess vowels early to establish the shape of the word, then attack the consonants around them.
- Use the category. A six-letter animal and a six-letter country pull you toward completely different letters.
- Once you have a few letters, think about what could actually fit rather than continuing down the frequency list.
- Common endings are worth a guess: ING, ION, ED and ER appear constantly.
Frequently asked questions
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Six. Each one adds a piece to the figure, and the sixth ends the round with the answer revealed.
What is the best first letter?
E, on pure frequency. After that A, R, I, O and T are all strong openings.
How does the streak work?
It counts consecutive solved words. A loss resets it to zero, and your best streak is saved in your browser.
