This is the Corsi block-tapping task, a standard measure of visuospatial working memory used in psychology since the early 1970s. The clinical version taps blocks in sequence; this version shows them all at once, which tests pattern memory rather than order memory.

It sits deliberately alongside the site's other two memory games and tests something different from both. Color Echo is a sequence — order is everything. Number Recall gives you labels to hang the positions on. Here there is no order and no labels, only shape, which is why it feels harder than it looks.

The usual span is around five to seven items, and the way past it is chunking: encoding a cluster as one geometric shape instead of several separate positions. A row of three becomes a line, a two-by-two becomes a square, and suddenly a seven-tile pattern is three things to remember rather than seven.

The flash gets shorter as the pattern grows, so later levels test how much you can take in at a glance as well as how much you can hold.
