About Memory Match

Memory Match โ€” concentration, pelmanism, pairs, depending on where you grew up โ€” is the simplest possible test of visual working memory, which is exactly why it has survived as a children's game, a cognitive test and a coffee-break distraction all at once.

The interesting part is that the optimal strategy is not to remember everything. It is to gather information cheaply early, then cash it in. A player who spends the first few moves deliberately revealing unknown cards in a fixed order will usually finish in fewer total moves than a player who tries to match immediately.

This board uses eight bright symbol pairs on a four by four grid, which is the size where the game is quick but not trivial. A perfect game is eight moves; a good game is under twenty; most first attempts land in the mid twenties.

There is no timer, deliberately. The pressure in this game should come from your own move counter, not from a clock that punishes thinking.

Tips for a higher score

  • Say the position in your head โ€” 'cherry, top right' sticks far better than an image alone.
  • Work in rows rather than clicking at random. Order gives your memory something to hang on to.
  • When you flip a new card, always pair it with a card you have already seen rather than another unknown.
  • Take the extra second before your second flip. Rushing costs more moves than thinking does.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as one move?

Every pair of flips is a single move, whether or not the cards matched.

What is a good score?

Sixteen moves or fewer on a sixteen-card board is strong. Eight is the theoretical perfect game and essentially requires luck.

Are the cards shuffled every game?

Yes, the layout is randomised each time you start a new board.
