About Number Recall

This is a browser version of a working-memory task that became famous after a 2007 study at Kyoto University, in which young chimpanzees outperformed human adults at recalling briefly-shown numeral positions. The result is genuinely surprising and has been replicated often enough to be taken seriously.

What it measures is spatial working memory, which is quite different from the sequence memory tested by a flashing-pad game. Here everything appears at once and vanishes at once, so there is no rhythm to lean on โ€” you are holding a snapshot rather than a tune.

The usual human limit sits somewhere around seven items, and almost everyone plateaus between six and nine. Getting further depends on chunking: encoding a cluster of three nearby numbers as a single shape rather than three separate facts. That is a learnable skill, and it is the whole game after level five.

The peek window shrinks as the board fills, so later levels test perception as much as recall. Three lives, and a wrong tile only re-deals the level rather than ending the run.

Tips for a higher score

  • Do not read the numbers in order โ€” take a picture of the whole board, then find the order in your head.
  • Group them spatially. Two numbers near each other are one memory, not two.
  • Click 1 immediately. Waiting for the timer wastes the peek you already have.
  • If you only half-remember the board, get the ones you are sure of first โ€” a life is only lost on a wrong click, not a slow one.
  • Most people plateau around seven or eight numbers. Getting past that is about chunking, not about looking harder.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly do the numbers hide?

When the peek timer expires, or immediately when you click the number 1 โ€” whichever happens first.

What is a good score?

Reaching level five, an eight-number board, is a solid result. Level eight and beyond puts you well above average.

Does a mistake end the game?

Not straight away. You have three lives, and a wrong tile re-deals a board of the same size.
