About Solitaire
Klondike is the game almost everyone means when they say solitaire, largely because it shipped with a certain desktop operating system in 1990 and quietly became the most played computer game in history. It was included to teach people how to use a mouse; the drag-and-drop was the actual lesson.
This is the draw-one variant, which is the friendlier of the two — you see every card in the deck in order rather than only every third one. Depending on the deal, somewhere around eighty percent of draw-one games are winnable with perfect play, though human players typically win closer to a third of them.
Most losses come from the same mistake: playing cards to the foundations too early. An ace on the tableau is dead weight, but a four or five is a landing spot that lets you unstack a column and reach the face-down cards underneath. Once a card is home it cannot come back, so every foundation move is a door closing.
Moves are the score here and lower is better, so the game rewards thinking rather than clicking. Auto-finish will sweep every card that can go home once the board is unpicked.
Tips for a higher score
- Turn over a face-down card whenever you can. Every hidden card is a move you cannot plan around.
- Do not send every ace and two home immediately — low cards on the tableau are useful for parking other cards.
- Empty a column early if you can. An empty column is the most valuable thing on the board, but only if you have a king to fill it.
- Before drawing from the deck, check every tableau move twice. The deck will still be there afterwards.
- If two moves look equal, take the one that exposes a face-down card.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move a card?
Click it to select it, then click the pile you want it on. Double-click instead to send it straight to its foundation if it will go.
Can I move several cards at once?
Yes. Clicking any face-up card in a column selects it and every card below it, and they move together if the destination accepts the top one.
Is every deal winnable?
No. Some deals are impossible from the start. If the board stops moving, deal a new one rather than assuming you missed something.
What does Auto-finish do?
It repeatedly plays every card that can legally go to a foundation. It never makes a tableau move, so it cannot spoil a position.
