About Pyramid Solitaire
Pyramid is a matching solitaire rather than a building one, and that changes the entire feel of it. There are no foundations to construct and no runs to maintain โ just a shrinking wall of cards and the arithmetic of thirteen.
It is a much harder game than Klondike and considerably more dependent on the deal. Only a modest fraction of pyramid layouts are winnable at all, because a single card buried in the wrong place under the apex can lock the whole structure. Recognising a dead board early and dealing a new one is a legitimate skill.
The strategy that actually matters is lookahead on unlocking. Every pyramid card covers two below it, so removing a pair near the base opens far more than removing one near the tip. Strong players work out which specific card is blocking their remaining pairs and aim the whole game at exposing it.
Two extra passes through the deck give you a little slack, but not much. Use the pyramid first and the deck second.
Tips for a higher score
- Work on the card that unlocks the most, not the pair that happens to be easiest.
- Look at what is underneath before you commit. Removing the wrong six can strand the seven you needed.
- Kings are free removals โ take them the moment they are exposed, there is never a reason to wait.
- Count the cards you still need. If both remaining fives are buried under the same queen, that queen is your real target.
- Your deck passes are limited, so exhaust the pyramid pairings before drawing.
Frequently asked questions
What are the card values?
Ace is 1, number cards are face value, jack is 11, queen is 12 and king is 13. Kings are removed on their own.
Why can I not select a card?
It is still covered by one or both of the cards resting on it. Covered cards are shown dimmed.
How many times can I go through the deck?
Three in total โ the initial pass plus two recycles. The counter in the header shows what is left.
Is every pyramid winnable?
Definitely not. Pyramid is much less forgiving than Klondike, and a fair number of deals are impossible. Restart without guilt.
