About Match Three

The match-three format is the most played puzzle genre in the world by a wide margin, and it is worth understanding why. The rules are legible in one glance, every move gives immediate feedback, and cascades hand out rewards the player did not directly earn โ€” a very effective loop.

The version here is deliberately the pure form: an eight by eight board, a sixty second clock, no power-ups, no lives, nothing to unlock. Score comes from the size of each clear multiplied by how deep into a cascade it happened, so setting up a chain pays far better than grinding out singles.

The board is generated with no matches already on it and is checked to contain at least one legal swap. If play ever reaches a dead position, it reshuffles rather than making you sit there โ€” a stuck board is not a puzzle, it is a bug.

Sixty seconds is short on purpose. The interesting decision in a timed match-three is always speed against value, and a long clock removes it.

Tips for a higher score

  • Work from the bottom of the board. Clearing low makes everything above fall, which is where cascades come from.
  • Longer lines are worth more than three, and a cascade multiplies everything after it.
  • Scan for tiles that are one move from two different matches โ€” those set up chains.
  • Do not hunt for the perfect move. In a timed round, three quick matches beat one clever one.
  • The board reshuffles automatically if no legal swap is left, so you never have to sit stuck.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my swap rejected?

A swap is only legal if it creates a line of three or more. The board shows the attempt and then puts it back.

How does scoring work?

Ten points per cleared tile, multiplied by the cascade depth. A clear caused by falling tiles is worth double, the next one triple, and so on.

What happens if there are no moves?

The board reshuffles automatically and play continues.
