About Sudoku

Sudoku arrived in Japanese puzzle magazines in the 1980s, went global through a British newspaper in 2004, and has been the default commuter puzzle ever since. It contains no arithmetic at all despite being made of numbers โ€” swap the digits for nine colours and the puzzle is identical. What it actually tests is constraint propagation: the discipline of noticing what a placement rules out.

Every puzzle on this page is generated fresh in your browser the moment you open it, and each one is verified to have exactly one solution before you ever see it. That verification is the part most casual implementations skip, and it matters: a grid with two solutions cannot be finished by reasoning, only by guessing, which turns the whole exercise into a coin flip.

Three difficulties are on offer, and the difference between them is simply how many clues are left standing โ€” forty for Easy, thirty-two for Medium, twenty-six for Hard. Clues are removed in rotationally symmetric pairs, which is why the finished grid has the balanced look of a newspaper puzzle rather than a random scatter of numbers.

The board helps without solving anything for you. Selecting a cell dims its row, column and box so you can see the constraints at a glance, matching digits are highlighted across the grid, and a number that conflicts with one of its peers turns red the instant you place it. Pencil marks are available for the harder grids, and placing a digit automatically clears that note from every cell it can no longer occupy.

Tips for a higher score

  • Scan for the digit that already appears most often on the board โ€” its remaining homes are the easiest to pin down.
  • Work a single box at a time and ask which digits are missing, rather than staring at the whole grid.
  • If a digit can only go in one cell of a row, column or box, place it โ€” even if that cell has other candidates.
  • Use notes early on the hard puzzles. Pencil marks are not cheating; they are how the puzzle is meant to be solved.
  • Never guess. Every puzzle here has exactly one solution reachable by pure logic, so a guess is just a slower way to restart.

Frequently asked questions

Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?

Yes. The generator counts solutions after every clue it removes and puts the clue back if the count is anything other than one, so no puzzle here ever requires guessing.

How do I use notes?

Press N or tap the Notes button, then enter digits as usual โ€” they appear as small pencil marks. Tap the same digit again to remove it. Turn notes off to place a real number.

Why did my number turn red?

It repeats a digit already present in that cell's row, column or 3x3 box. The board flags the clash immediately rather than letting you discover it twenty moves later.

What does the Best time track?

Your fastest completed puzzle in this browser, across all three difficulties. Reset clears your entries but keeps the current puzzle; Restart deals a new one.
