About Star Defender

Star Defender is a wave shooter in the lineage that began in 1978 and effectively invented the arcade as a cultural institution. The formula has never needed changing: a grid of enemies, a single gun, and a difficulty curve driven entirely by the fact that killing enemies makes the survivors faster.

That last detail is the whole design. The formation steps on a timer, and every alien you destroy shortens the interval. A run therefore accelerates toward its own conclusion โ€” the board gets emptier and more dangerous at the same time, and the final three aliens move at a speed that would have been unplayable at the start.

Return fire comes only from the lowest surviving alien in each column, which turns shooting into a resource decision rather than a reflex. Clearing a column bottom-up permanently silences one gun; clearing it top-down leaves the gun in place and just makes it faster. Players who notice this survive roughly twice as long.

Waves are endless. Each one starts the formation lower and moves it faster, so the question is never whether you lose but how many waves you get through first.

Tips for a higher score

  • Kill from the outside in. Narrowing the formation buys you far more time before it hits the edge.
  • The swarm speeds up with every alien you destroy, so the last few are always the hardest.
  • You can have two shots in flight at once. Fire the second before the first lands to keep pressure on.
  • Stay near the middle. Committing to a corner is how you get boxed in by incoming fire.
  • When a column is nearly clear, finish it โ€” that permanently removes one source of return fire.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the aliens speed up?

The formation moves on a timer that shortens with every alien destroyed. It is the original 1978 behaviour โ€” which started as a hardware limitation and turned out to be excellent design.

How many shots can I have on screen?

Two at a time. Firing again before both land does nothing, so time your shots rather than holding the button.

What ends the game?

Losing all three ships, or the swarm descending far enough to reach your row โ€” the second one ends the run immediately regardless of lives.
