About Aim Trainer
This is the simplest possible measurement of pointing performance, and it maps onto a genuinely old piece of research. Fitts's law, published in 1954, says the time to hit a target depends on how far away it is and how big it is โ specifically on the ratio between the two.
That is why the targets here shrink as you go. The distance stays roughly constant because placement is random, but the difficulty climbs steadily as the target gets smaller, which is exactly the variable Fitts's law isolates. Your average reaction time rising over a round is the law happening in real time.
Two numbers are worth watching. Hits measure raw throughput. Average reaction measures how efficiently you move, and it is the one that improves with practice โ most people can take a hundred milliseconds off their average within a few sessions by stopping the habit of over-correcting near the target.
Misses are counted separately and reported as accuracy, so spraying clicks does not help.
Tips for a higher score
- Move and click as one motion. Stopping over the target and then clicking wastes a tenth of a second every time.
- Keep your eyes on the target, not the cursor. Chasing the cursor is the single most common mistake.
- Accuracy beats speed once the targets get small โ a miss costs the same time as a hit and gains nothing.
- Use your whole arm for large moves and your wrist for fine ones.
- Reset to a comfortable position between targets rather than leaving the cursor where it landed.
Frequently asked questions
Do the targets get harder?
Yes. Each one is slightly smaller than the last, down to a floor, so later hits are meaningfully harder than early ones.
What counts as a miss?
Any click on the background rather than the target. Misses do not cost you time, but they lower the accuracy figure.
What is a good average reaction time?
Somewhere around 550 to 700 milliseconds is typical with a mouse. Under 450 is genuinely quick.
